D id you know? At the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the ball’s journey across a roulette table creates a distinctive sound unlike any other gaming room worldwide. When chance guides it to rest in a pocket, it produces an unmistakably refined, muted tone. “ It’s more elegant, ” explains Jérôme Tachoires. As head of the Gaming Workshop for thirty-three years and a trained upholsterer-decorator, he oversees the Casino’s equipment with unparalleled expertise passed down since 1863.

A Legacy Born in 1863 A know-how that has been passed down orally since 1863. That year, the Casino de Monte-Carlo was inaugurated under the leadership of Prince Charles III and François Blanc, founder of the Société des Bains de Mer. It was an immediate success. Behind the scenes, carpenters, cabinet makers, mechanics and upholsterers were busy making roulettes and gaming tables that would offer players an incomparable experience. Since then, nothing has changed. Every day, the seven artisans from the Casino de Monte-Carlo workshop take turns inspecting the gaming rooms. They check cylinders, clean, and repair… nothing escapes their vigilance.

Bespoke Craftsmanship The roulette tables are crafted from beech, ebony, and rosewood with thirty layers of varnish, matching the finish of Riva boats and the Orient Express. The brass cylinder is regularly polished to spin for at least 8 minutes when launched at 4 km/hour. The ball track has a steeper gradient than standard roulettes, creating an unmistakable high-pitched sound. The pocket where the ball completes its dance is lined with felt cloth, ensuring a cushioned landing without clatter. It is also deeper, which prevents ball jumps. “This matters greatly to players,” notes Jérôme Tachoires.
