Le Yacht Club de Monaco engagé pour une plaisance durable
Environmental initiatives have expanded from land to sea. On the Mediterranean shores, the Principality is deeply involved in protecting marine ecosystems. The Yacht Club de Monaco sets the standard as part of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ initiative. Here is an overview of their actions. T he Yacht Club de Monaco has developed various initiatives to unite yachting and environmental protection in its marina.
In 2019, it became the world’s first venue to implement DC fast-charging stations for maritime use. Four charging points serve electric boats throughout the year, particularly during the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, whose 12 th edition will take place from 1-5 July—an event dedicated to innovations in propulsion and hull design. The Yacht Club also utilises portable solar-powered battery solutions. These electric generators, equipped with multiple outputs (USB, DC, AC, wireless), enable a completely energy-independent Race PC. Another initiative addresses water cleanliness. A dockside connection system prevents uncontrolled discharge into the sea, treating substantial volumes of wastewater annually. Since 2021, the DPOL robot has collected nearly 5 kg of floating waste monthly from the marina. Moreover, the Sports Section’s boats are cleaned using recycled and redistributed swimming pool water. In 2023, the Marina installed 24 ‘Biohuts’— artificial nurseries that recreate rocky and sandy seabed ecosystems. These installations shield fish larvae from predators. Scientific monitoring has identified 12 species and over 400 fish within these habitats.
