“ I had already conducted the orchestra several times at the request of Gianluigi Gelmetti, but I never imagined I would be offered this position in 2016, ” confides Kazuki Yamada. “ Didier de Cottignies, who joined me in 2019 as Artistic Delegate, was like a father to me and an invaluable guide. Thanks to his connections, we were able to offer audiences encounters with truly exceptional soloists. ” For the Japanese maestro, born in 1979 and renowned for his joyful temperament, there have been many highlights with the orchestra, such as the 2022 recording of Camille Saint-Saëns’ opera Déjanire: “ It was a genuine challenge because there was no existing translation of the libretto, and I had to translate from French into English and then into Japanese. This opera has become a part of me. ” Two years later, during a tour of Japan in 2024, the conductor felt that he and the Philharmonic had reached a crossroads: “ It was a sincere moment, because I was conducting the Monegasque orchestra in my own country. I wept because I was proud that the OPMC had become one of the best in the world. That was when I decided to leave .” Kazuki Yamada will now pursue his career primarily in Germany. “ I will have the pleasure of working in the same city where I live and of spending more time with my family, ” he explains. Appointed as the Artistic Director of the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin (DSO) for the 2026–2027 season, he will be working in Berlin, where his musician wife already resides. ■

Grâce à son réseau, nous avons pu offrir au public des rendez-vous avec des solistes d’exception. » Avec le maestro japonais, né en 1979 et de tempérament joyeux, la formation a vécu des temps forts comme l’enregistrement en 2022 de l’opéra Déjanire de Camille Saint-Saëns : « Un challenge car il n’y avait aucune traduction du livret, et j’ai dû passer du français à l’anglais puis au japonais. Cet opéra est devenu une partie de moi. » Deux ans plus tard, en tournée au Japon en 2024, le chef considère alors que lui et l’ensemble philharmonique sont à la croisée des chemins : « C’était un moment intense car je dirigeais l’orchestre monégasque dans mon propre pays. J’ai pleuré car j’étais fier que l’OPMC soit devenu l’un des meilleurs au monde. C’est là que j’ai décidé de partir. » C’est notamment en Allemagne que Kazuki Yamada prolongera sa carrière. « J’aurai la joie de travailler dans la ville où je vis et de passer plus de temps avec ma famille », poursuit le chef, nommé directeur artistique du Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin (DSO) pour la saison 2026-2027 et dont l’épouse musicienne vit à Berlin. ■

UPCOMING MUSICAL HIGHLIGHTS After the final two concerts of the main season – the film in concert of La La Land at the Grimaldi Forum on 21 June and the traditional melodies performed by the Sirba Octet at the Salle Garnier on 26 June – the programme continues from 9 July in the Cour d’Honneur of the Prince’s Palace with the summer concerts. “ What makes this venue so extraordinary is not so much the acoustics but its unique atmosphere, steeped in Monegasque culture and the history of the Princely Family, without whom the orchestra would not exist, ” explains Kazuki Yamada. The conductor, who was the first Japanese-born Artistic and Music Director to lead a European orchestra, will conduct the ensemble for the final concert of the season on 6 August – an evening dedicated to Liszt and Ravel, alongside the prodigious French pianist Alexandre Kantorow.

PROCHAINS RENDEZ-VOUS MUSICAUX Après les deux derniers concerts de la Grande saison - le ciné-concert La La Land (au Grimaldi Forum le 21 juin) et les musiques traditionnelles du Sirba Octet (à la Salle Garnier le 26 juin) - la programmation se poursuit dès le 9 juillet dans la Cour d’Honneur du Palais princier pour les concerts d’été. « Ce n’est pas tant l’acoustique qui rend ce lieu extraordinaire que son atmosphère unique liée à la culture monégasque et à l’histoire de la famille princière, sans laquelle l’orchestre n’existerait pas », explique Kazuki Yamada. Le chef, qui a été le premier directeur artistique et musical de nationalité japonaise à prendre la tête d’un orchestre européen, dirigera la formation lors du dernier concert de la saison le 6 août. Une soirée dédiée à Liszt et Ravel, en compagnie du prodigieux pianiste français Alexandre Kantorow.
